Total annual liquidations have historically been more than 2000 per year from 2001 until 2018, and upwards of 3000 in 2008, 2009 and 2010. In 2023 the total number of liquidations came close to 2000 after creeping below this number for the three years prior (2019, 2020, 2021).
These lower than average figures were brought about by limited business activity and disruptions relating to the Corona Virus pandemic. Total liquidations for 2024 are likely to return to numbers upwards of 2000 liquidations per year.
In 2021 there were a total of 1380 liquidations in New Zealand, the lowest figure in over 20 years. In 2022 there were 1557 liquidations, which equates to an increase from 2021, of 12.8%. In 2023 there were 1835 liquidations, which equates to an increase of a further 17.9%.
Since 2001, there has only been two years, (2011 and 2013) where there were more company removals registered than company incorporations. There are currently more than 730,000 registered businesses in New Zealand.
