Total annual liquidations have historically been more than 2000 per year from 2003 until 2016, and upwards of 3000 in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
In 2024 total liquidations were 2,504, a significant 27% increase from 2023. For some context, this % increase is greater than the 20.38% increase to liquidations we observed during the global financial crisis from 2007 to 2008.
Diverging from patterns in previous years, liquidations in December 2024 also rose by 15% from the previous month, in contrast to the 14% and 22% decreases recorded in 2023 and 2022, respectively.
In 2021 there were a total of 1380 liquidations in New Zealand, the lowest figure in over 20 years. In 2022 there were 1557 liquidations, which equates to an increase from 2021, of 12.8%. In 2023 there were 1835 liquidations, which equates to an increase of a further 17.9%.
Since 2001, there has only been two years, (2011 and 2013) where there were more company removals registered than company incorporations. There are currently more than 730,000 registered businesses in New Zealand.
